Laptop Condition and Functionality Checklist

Before you sell your laptop online, it is a good idea to evaluate the devices overall condition and check it over for common damages. Below we have compiled a list of some easy things to check for when selling your laptop online. Please make sure to check your item’s condition and any defects that might apply.

  • Flawless Condition: This laptop should show no signs of wear and should be in like-new condition.
  • Good Condition: This laptop should be in good condition, free of scratches, dents, or other cosmetic flaws.
  • Fair Condition: This laptop has signs of scratches, dents, stickers/sticker residue, or other minor cosmetic flaws.
  • Poor Condition: This laptop has signs of heavy wear such as; broken pieces, cracks in casings, or missing pieces.
  • Missing OS / Windows not activated: This applies if your laptop is either missing its operating system, does not boot into Windows, or Windows is not genuine/activated. This might not seem like a big deal, but a locked system substantially slows down our inspection process. If you remove this password it will help us both by speeding up our testing process and ultimately get you paid fast to sell your laptop.
  • Doesn't Turn On/ Defective Motherboard: If your laptop does not power on, or if it does boot/power on but has another problem with either getting into the system BIOS or staying powered on, it falls into this category. A lot of people looking to sell broken laptops will apply this defect if the laptop will not power.
  • Liquid Damage: Spilled coffee on your laptop? Drop your laptop into the bathtub? Select this option.
  • Overheats: Laptop burning your lap every time you turn it on? Does it power-off due to temperature issues? Your laptop is likely overheating.
  • BIOS Locked: What this means is that your laptop's BIOS settings are not able to be accessed or changed. You may have applied a password in the systems bios and forgot. Please remove all BIOS passwords before sending your device in.
  • Screen [No Display/Broken/Visual Blemishes]: Select this option if your laptop's display doesn't turn on, is broken or shattered, or has visual blemishes such as dead or stuck pixels, uncleanable marks, scratches, or dust under the display. If you are trying to sell a laptop with broken screen we got you covered.
  • Battery [Missing/Defective/Not Original]: We ask that you please provide the OEM, or original equipment manufacturer, battery that came with your laptop. Also, for a battery to be considered functional, it must charge to at least 80% of its original capacity and must not show any signs of puffing or swelling.
  • Charger [Missing/Defective/Not Original]: Please include the original OEM charger with your laptop. Frayed or exposed wires would be considered defective.
  • Hard Drive [Missing/Defective]: If you have removed your hand drive before selling your laptop, please mark this option. Same goes for any sort of issue you are having with it, including audible noises such as clicking.
  • Memory/Ram [Missing/Defective]: If you have removed your memory/ram sticks before selling your laptop, please mark this option.
  • Keyboard/Trackpad [Defective/Non-responsive]: Certain keys on your keyboard missing, not working, sticky, or otherwise being unresponsive. Same goes for the trackpad or the mouse buttons.
  • Optical Drive [Missing/Defective]: CD/DVD Drive has a missing faceplate, or the entire drive is removed or not able to read discs.
  • Other Defective Hardware [Speakers/Camera/Mic/etc...]: This is a catch-all option for all other defects not mentioned above when trying to sell your laptop online. If you know something not mentioned, like a webcam does not work, please use this option.

Three Ways To Locate Your Laptop Model

Need help locating what model laptop you are selling? Our list below provides detailed information on all laptop model locations.

1. Locate laptop model by Product Label.

  1. Look inside the laptop. The laptop model is commonly found inside the laptop on the units palmrest or around the display bezel.
  2. Look on the back of the laptop. Look on the back of the laptop for stickers or near the serial number.
  3. Look underneath the laptop battery. If the laptop battery is removable you might be able to locate the model number under it.

2. Locate laptop model using Windows.

  1. In Windows click on the Start Menu
  2. Click on Search
  3. Type Information into the search
  4. Under System Model you will locate the information for your laptop

3. Locate laptop model in the devices Bios.

Entering a laptops bios can be somewhat tricky but also is a very reliable source to locate the model of your laptop. We have created some simple guides to enter your laptops bios below:

This fist method of entering a laptops bios requires using a standard Windows 10 installation.

  1. In Windows click on the Start Menu
  2. Click on Search
  3. Type Change Advanced Startup Options
  4. Under Advanced Startup click Reset Now
  5. Click the option Troubleshoot
  6. Click Advanced Options
  7. Click UEFI Firmware Settings and Restart when prompted
  8. Under Product Name you will locate the information for your laptop

The second method of entering a laptops bios requires hitting the correct key on your laptop while the laptop is booting up.

  1. Power off your laptop
  2. Power on the laptop
  3. While the laptop is booting up continuously tap the laptop bios key for your laptop brand below
  • Acer: F2 or Delete
  • Alienware: F2
  • ASUS: F2
  • Dell: F2 or F12
  • Gateway: F1 or F2
  • Gigabyte: F2 or Delete
  • HP: F10
  • Lenovo: Enter Key
  • MSI: Delete
  • Microsoft Surface Tablets: Press and hold volume up button.
  • Razer: F1 or Delete
  • Samsung: F2
  • Sony: F2
  • Toshiba: F2
